Historical buildings in Muggia

Cathedral of Saints John and Paul

Here we find the Duomo dedicated to Saints John and Paul: the church was built on the remains of a pre-existing church, and was consecreted by the Bishop of Triest Arlongo dei Visgoni on 29 th December 1263. The Venetian-style building has a white-stone façade .

In the upper part, a magnificent rose window in the middle of which there is an image of the Virgin Mary with the Child surrounded by three epigraphs. The one on the left side celebrate the hard restoration made in 1865, the upper epigraph the beginning of works to the façade under the Bishop Nicolò (member probably of Aldegardi's family) and the one on the right side mentions the mayor Pietro Dandolo (1466-1467), that followed the completion of the church.

In the lower part of the frame two elegant Gothic windows join the portal on top of which there is a lunette with a high relief representing the Saint Trinity worshipped by Saint John and Saint Paul .

The inside, divided into one nave and two aisles is simple, since stabilization, restauration works and removals of the lateral baroque altars at the end of 19 th century. A fragment of the magnificent fresco of the 14 th century, once located in the central nave, can still be seen. Along the walls there are some 18 th and 19 th century processional lights, belonging to ancient fraternal orders.

City Hall

Near the Duomo, you will find the elegant rebuilt and enlarged after the 1930 fire, with the fifteenth century Saint Mark lion and the ancient coats-of-arms of Venetian mayors and noble local families.

Saint Francisco's Church

Saint Francisco's Church, almost rebuilt in 1411, is an important example of Gothic-Franciscan church; inside it contains some precious historic traces like the headstones with the 16 th and 17 th centuries coat of arms, which commemorate the ancient noble families of Muggia. Moreover inside the church there are two altar pieces of great value representing the The Virgin with Sacred Belt (17 th century) attributed to the Venetian painter G. Liberti and Virgin of the Milk (14 th century) and an example of 15 th century Vesperbild .

Until Napoleon's coming, next to the church there was a convent afterwards abandoned and in its place in 1964, the new parish house was buit.

The medieval centre of Muggia had a tortoise shape surrounded by walls, still visible in part; only one tower and two doors remain of the ancient defensive structure: the northern and eastern ones.

Archaeological Park

Thanks to recent excavation campaigns, today the hill has become a real and true archaeological park with pathways equipped with didactic panels which allow the visitor to comprehend the history of the old fortified village.

The Castle

Muggia is dominated by a fourteenth century castle, a fortress built by Patriarch Marquado in order to control the tough citizens of Muggia when the pro-Venetian party, leaded by Raffaele di Ser Steno, took possession of the town for two years (from November 1372 to November 1374). The building of the castle, changed during the centuries, began in 1375 and finished in 1399. In 1991 it was bought by private owners and with a wise restoration they brought it to ancient brightness.

Basilica of Saint Mary Assumption

A few kilometers away from the town center of Muggia, on the south-western hill, stands the Romanesque basilica of Saint Mary Assumption and  from the square in front, you can take in a magnificent panoramic view on Muggia valley  and Triest. The masterpiece of Romanesque architecture is what remains of the Castrum Muglae; the building made of sand stone, is divided into a nave and two aisles.
